Cathy Goocher is a registered nurse and has spent the last 9 years working for BayCare in the Central Pinellas area. She has always been passionate about her career in the healthcare industry, and was also interested in the entrepreneurial aspect, and liked the idea of owning her own business.  This past October, Cathy finally realized her dream, and became the owner of Right at Home in Central Pinellas.  She runs the business’ day-to-day operations.

Where are you from?

I was born in a small village on the island of Crete in Greece and lived there until I was 5.  I was then adopted by Greek American parents and grew up in New York. I moved to Florida in the summer of 1987 and have lived here since.

How did you learn about Right at Home?

I’ve always wanted to own a business and I considered franchises as an option. I was looking for something that was a fit to me personally, and given my nursing background, I settled upon the homecare industry. I researched many options and discovered Right at Home. What distinguished them from others is their personal, hands-on approach. They were very knowledgeable and answered all my questions which made me feel comfortable with their franchise model.

What are some of your achievements (personally or professionally) that you think will help you along the way in your business?

As an employee for BayCare, I specialized in Geriatrics, helped with quadriplegics and people with traumatic brain injuries.  I also worked with cancer patients. Now that I’m working with clients in a home setting, I know how to assist in managing their transition from the hospital to their safe home environment.  My personal touch will be the focus of my Right at Home franchise.  My background will serve me well, and be extremely beneficial as I develop personal relationships with all of my customers.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to get to where you are today with your business?

As a new business owner, I am learning to develop the business from the ground up.  Debi Dietrich, who is our new, highly experienced office manager, is assisting me with my computer skills and the day-to-day operations.  I have the support of the franchise with me every step of the way.  They take all difficulties out of the equation so I do not have to reinvent the wheel.  I feel better prepared every day.

Are there any prominent industry trends that you are experiencing right now?

One of Medicare’s rules penalizes hospitals for readmitting patients for the same ailment if that ailment occurs within thirty days of the first one.  The reason for the rule is because re-admittance rates continue to climb.  Hospitals are now getting on board with our services; Right at Home helps to greatly reduce the chances of re-hospitalization.  Right at Home’s program for transitioning patients from the hospital to home, is called “Right Transitions.

What are your expansion or development plans?

We are presently developing our first territory in Pinellas County and will develop our second one as we grow.  Our goal is to expand, adding a third territory within the first 5 years.

ABOUT RIGHT AT HOME

Right at Home, a privately held provider of in-home assistance and elder care was founded in 1995 by Allen Hager, a hospital administrator.  He was concerned about patients needing additional assistance upon their discharge from the hospital.  In order to gain a better understanding of the business, Hager became a certified nursing assistant before he opened the first Right at Home office.  He understood the issues that families faced as their loved ones returned home from the hospital.  Today, Right at Home generates more than $173 million in annual revenues through its more than 200 offices across the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil.  Right at Home recently opened its first home senior care franchise in China.  All outlets are franchisee-owned and operated, and staffed with skilled professionals who are trained to provide home based care for thousands of clients.
