Rev. Dr. Phillip Pledger, a California native, has always had a desire to serve people with special needs. Pledger has spent most of his career as a pastor in the Lutheran Church, but he will begin a new professional endeavor by taking over ownership of an existing Right at Home office in Yucaipa, Calif.

Pledger received his undergraduate degree from Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. in 1980, his Masters of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. in 1984, and his Doctorate from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA in 2009. His work assignments have included working with hearing-impaired people in north Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan, as well as serving congregations in Huntington Beach, Ontario, and Yucaipa, Calif. In 2006, Rev. Pledger began working as the executive director (now president) of Lutheran Braille Workers.

In addition to professional experience, Pledger also had personal experience serving others while caring for his ailing family members. “My father died in 1980 from cancer; we tried to serve his needs, but it was hard because there were no home hospice options available in California at the time,” he said. “When my mother had cancer, it was the same scenario. My wife and I lived with her for the last part of her life and were her primary caregivers.”

When Pledger started considering business ownership, he wanted to continue to serve others. Once he started looking into franchise opportunities, he found that becoming a franchisee with Right at Home met this criterion.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Right at Home?
For most of my life, I’ve been interested in owning a business, especially one that would allow me to serve people while being my own boss. Right at Home’s mission fit with my values and personal mission. Really, I wanted to continue doing what I was doing before—helping care for populations with special needs, including seniors.
