Walter Ochoa, an immigrant of Guatemalan descent, moved to New York City in June of 2001. Since moving to the United States, Walter has held various positions with companies like Verizon Wireless, C-Life Group Importer, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. After working on Wall Street for seven years, Walter became interested in pursuing the American Dream and became increasingly interested in opening his own business in Brooklyn. After working with FranNet to help in his business selection, Walter ultimately chose to open a Right at Home franchise in Brooklyn back in May of 2011 and his story follows below.
When choosing a franchise, what were the criteria you used to make your decision?
When I started looking into business options, I began working with FranNet to start learning about all of the different franchising models across all industries and, after learning my background and what I was interested in, they ultimately narrowed down the best matches to three options. After doing internet research and making initial connections with the three different brands, I narrowed down the choices to a commercial cleaning franchise and Right at Home. After I spoke with both brands, went to the Discovery Days and spoke with the executive teams, I knew that I wanted to open a Right at Home franchise because they were very willing to answer all the questions I had and weren’t trying to sell me on a brand, but sharing the ups and downs of being a small business owner.
What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
When I began looking into possible business options, franchising stood out to me because of the proven and systematical approach that franchises had developed based on successful businesses. As a first time business owner I wanted to make sure that I would be opening a business that had the structure and foundation to survive in this market. I also loved the franchise model because it offered support; marketing tools and training that would help prepare my wife and me for our own business, educating us on best practices. The strong national identity Right at Home had already established was another factor that attracted me to the franchise system.
With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business?
After working with the C-Life Group and on Wall Street, I feel that my past work experiences have helped me understand a wide range of individuals which will help my business in Brooklyn. In addition, I will be overseeing and operating the financial side of the business and feel that my past careers have given me the skills necessary to properly manage and oversee the day to day business operations.
Why did you choose to enter the elder care industry?
I was looking for a career that was more compassionate that working on Wall Street. When I started looking at other business options, I realized that I wanted to open a business that would directly contribute to my local community which is why I was instantly attracted to Right at Home. Knowing that I could make a difference in someone’s life made a difference to my wife and me, which ultimately led to our decision to move forward with Right at Home.
