Description

Nikki Holles, VP of Human Resources at Right at Home, supports franchisees as a resource on all information regarding caregiver recruitment, retention, and engagement. Join Nikki and Susie Dunn, Director of Resale and Expansions, as they discuss the hot topics for franchise owners within caregiver recruitment and retention subject matter.

Caregiver Status Update for the Ed of Q1 2023

Nikki Holles notes that at the end of 1st Qtr 2023, they are hearing and seeing from franchisees that the number of applicants is continuing to go up on a weekly basis and those that are applying are a bit stickier. “There is still a lot of progress to be made and franchisees still have to be creative,” said Nikki.

New Corporate Tools and Resources for Franchisees

The Corporate office provides support to Franchisees and is currently working on Digital Best Practices from a caregiver recruitment and retention standpoint. We are visiting offices that are seeing high applicant volume and high success rates on their applicant-hire ratio and retention rates. We then document those into best practices to allow others to learn from those successful franchisees. Corporate is also testing an applicant tracking system integration with lead generation, by creating a partnership with a network that has access to millions of CNAs across the US.

Retention vs. Turnover

Caregivers are measured by retention because there’s a natural turnover in the caregiver role. Because there may be nursing students who work in this role until they get their nursing license, as an example. Right at Home has also reviewed the industry average for retention which is at 85%, while Right at Home is just above the industry benchmark at 86.16%. And we’re continuing to tick up a bit every time we look at it. So our franchisees are recognizing the importance of creating engagement programs and listening to caregivers and what’s important to them. They know that paid training and paid orientation allow caregivers to flourish in their careers with Right at Home.

Employee Retention in a Resale Situation

It’s important to engage, educate and communicate with caregivers throughout the resale process. Create a marketing and communications effort not only toward office employees and investors but also toward your caregiver population. Put them at ease, and allow them to maintain a sense of control in their role.

Caregiver Status

Caregivers work for the franchisee. The Corporate office does not maintain any franchisees’ caregiver or office staff records. The franchisee is the sole decision maker, hiring manager, and payroll company for all employees within that entity.

Caregiver of the Year

For a caregiver to be nominated for this award is so meaningful to them. Good caregivers take pride in being recognized for what comes naturally to them as a human being, i.e., compassionate, empathetic, hard-working, and dedicated. There are regional winners as well as a national winner. Cash rewards and marketing assets are provided as part of this program to the franchise winners, as well as press releases for their local community. Every office should and can submit caregivers for nomination. The winner will be announced at the annual Home Improvement conference.

Caregiver Exclusivity

Caregivers can work for multiple employers. The reason is there is a money factor to pay bills, and oftentimes, a caregiver has to deal with the death of a client. Thus, their hours go down until you get them fit with another client.

Corporate-Owned Locations

Corporate believes it helps us be a better franchisor because we’re experiencing the same trials and tribulations as franchisees. We can be the test kitchens for new partnerships or programs, making certain they are successful before they are rolled out to the rest of the franchisees. We do not compete with other franchisees.

Employee Benefits from Franchisees

There are approximately 300 unique franchise owners right now, and there’s a lot who offer some type of medical benefit. There are some of the larger franchises that offer a bit more in terms of medical and pay a bit more toward premiums. Corporate does offer some preferred vendor relationships with benefits brokers who can help franchisees provide these kinds of benefits, if they want to offer them. We are seeing a lot of different or unique benefits such as childcare reimbursement or subsidies at some of the franchise locations.
