Meet the Family | Scott Hill

Duration: 11m 04s

Description

Scott Hill became a Right at Home franchise owner in 2021. He is located in Genesee County, Michigan, which includes the city of Flint. Jessica Cornelius is a Franchise Development Director for Right at Home Corporate. Listen as they discuss Scott’s career change, what a typical day looks like, and the support he receives from Corporate. Scott also provides some great advice for prospective franchisees.

Change in Career

With a degree in engineering and a master’s in business, Scott was working as an engineer and manager in the automotive industry before changing careers to start his franchise. Scott’s father was having some health concerns and his health was failing. When his father was in a hospital or nursing home, his condition, at least psychologically, got worse. While doing some research, he realized the population of older adults is growing so fast, and the need for care would also grow. It was a positive business case, plus he could do a good thing to help people who needed care and would rather be at home for as long as possible. “In this career, you make a difference in people’s lives. And there’s no other reward like that… improving a human being’s life,” Scott said,

A Typical Day

Starting his franchise in the middle of the pandemic, was difficult.  He is so thankful to be out of that difficult severe stage. It required his team to learn how to work remotely and find ways to become more efficient. The silver lining of that is the flexibility we have as an office. A typical day is a morning meeting with the staff to review client happenings that need to be addressed, open shifts, plan for the day, recruitment or inquiries to be followed up. Then we get to work interviewing caregivers, providing orientations, or hiring. We follow up on referral sources for new clients, accounting, paying bills, etc.

Where We Help

Seniors want to stay at home, but that can be a challenge for some family members. That’s where we come in, where we can help.

Most Valuable Support

Meetings with the performance coach are so valuable, especially for a new owner that doesn’t have a lot of experience. They are a great resource as they have much knowledge and experience working with other owners and can reach out to other owners to get questions answered if they can’t answer directly. The collective knowledge of all the other franchise owners in your region or state is invaluable. In Michigan, they meet monthly and share experiences, knowledge, and suggestions.

Advice to a Prospective Franchisee

Scott would advise potential franchisees to reach out and develop relationships with other franchise owners in your area. Those franchisees have been through what you are going to go through, and that experience is so valuable.
