Meet the Family | Tim Randall

Duration: 11m 55s

Description

Tim Randall, Right at Home franchise owner, talks with Jessica Cornelius, Franchise Development Director, about what attracted him and his wife Lisa to own a home care business, as well as his experiences of being an owner. Randall owns three territories in Fairfield County, Connecticut, for the past 12 years. He and his wife operate out of one location and have virtual offices in the other two territories.

Getting Started With Right at Home

Randall’s oldest son is a special need individual, and they had always been very involved with his care. They were involved with discharge planners, hospitals, schools, social workers, Occupational Therapy, and other related spaces to home care. Having that life experience helped set the stage for Tim and his wife to become owners.

Before Right at Home

Tim describes himself as the poster child for a career change, as he worked on Wall Street for over 26 years and also worked overseas for a couple of years. Randall noted that they bought a territory in Danbury, Connecticut, from an owner who had it for one year and decided it wasn’t for her. They then bought a new territory. Tim has also been instrumental in introducing Right at Home to several others who have joined the franchise system.

Choosing Right at Home

Lisa had gone to Discovery Day and was sold on Right at Home. She said this is what we want to do. Tim wasn’t quite sold on home care or Right at Home. It took him about three months to agree this would be the next chapter of their lives. Lisa enjoyed being in the office every day, while Tim really enjoys working outside of the business in marketing, talking to fold about what they do. Corporate educated them on how to present their suite of services, and it has resonated with clients. Randall said they were able to hit the ground running. He notes the best part of his job is being out talking to people his age, in their 50s and 60s, that are caring for their parents

A Typical Day

They have been pretty much working 50-60 hours per week up until COVID. Lisa has moved more into a part-time role now and is devoting more time to the eldercare space outside the office. It did take some time for them to separate roles, but they now have a clear division in roles. Tim runs the day-to-day, working half of the day in the office, and the other half out marketing. Lisa is now part-time, so they did hire office staff to assist

Most Valuable Support from Right at Home

Corporate support is very good, providing a business coach, and internet specialist, and will help you with protocols, getting your business set up, QuickBooks support, staffing information, etc. But the best support is the other owners are available when you need answers regarding specific scenarios. Tim finds they are an invaluable resource.

Advice to Prospective Franchisees

If somebody is calling Right at Home or a competitor asking about our services, they need us. It’s not something that can wait like buying a car or a computer. The person calling needs home care and is doing their due diligence to purchase versus just shopping around. Also, the hours are not just nine to five, Monday through Friday. It’s the way our health system is going. Discharges from assisted living can happen at 11 pm on a Saturday night or Tuesday at 1 pm. You need to understand those moments in terms of organizing your life in this business.
