Duration: 16m 16s

Description: Ken Helmuth, a Right at Home franchisee in Durham and Chapel Hill, NC, utilized his background in healthcare for different pharmaceutical and medical device companies as he made the decision to become a Right at Home franchisee. His experience in sales, sales management, and commercial leadership was helpful when he was presented with a resale opportunity in his neighborhood.  It had a reasonable base, but also so much room for growth. When Helmuth visited Omaha in 2013, the corporate team seemed to be genuine and sincere, and found Right at Home had a national brand that could be locally leveraged.

Ken discusses his decision-making process on why he pursued a resale opportunity. He notes his background in healthcare, along with his knowledge of population health, hospital marketplace, and understanding of the demographics of the area allowed him to come in and utilize all of the things he had learned from previously building teams and scaling an existing business.

Helmuth reminisces upon what a typical day was like when he bought his first agency, which had 19 clients, one employee, and a part-time nurse. His day then consisted of a lot more of the day-to-day nuts and bolts. Today with four franchises, Ken is more involved in the general management, focusing on key metrics that have proven to be successful with home care business in general, such as having enough caregivers, are there other resources for the recruiters who work in our company, how strategically to position the company to be successful.

Helmuth says it is vital to find an employee who is your confidant and can help take things off your plate. Without this person, you won’t be able to grow your business. It is important to buy into your own organization, be front and center, as well as create your own culture within the business and the community.

When researching a franchise opportunity, Helmuth notes it is so important to talk to as many franchisees as possible to compare the real sense of day-to-day. And, research the main organization you’re investing in.  Review how they interact with you, and your spouse, and whether they are going to support you.

Ken feels the most valuable support Corporate provides to him is the secret sauce. From hiring to onboarding to running the business, there are so many nuances and every state is different, so the specific support and documentation provided by Corporate Right at Home is the secret sauce on how to run a Right at Home franchise. Also, the opportunity to participate in a performance group, which is a group of 10-12 owners who come together and agree to work together, and bounce things off of each other.
