Pasadena Weekly: Right at Home Family Shares a Compassion for Caregiving

Ten years ago, Renee Concialdi left a long, successful corporate career to share the importance of compassionate, professional support for aging loved ones. 

The move she felt was essential, as it came after caring for her mother for 18 years. Her response was to open Right at Home agencies with her family in Pasadena and West Covina. The franchise supports families by keeping their senior loved ones comfortable and safe at home.

Founded in 1995, Right at Home offers in-home care to seniors and adults with disabilities who want to live independently. Most Right at Home offices are independently owned and operated, directly employing and supervising all caregiving staff. 

Each caregiver is thoroughly screened, trained, and bonded/insured before entering a client’s home. Right at Home’s global office is based in Omaha, with more than 700 franchise locations in the United States, and five other countries. 

During her corporate career, Renee decided to “pick her own next act, so to speak.”

“I went on a journey to find a higher calling,” she said. 

“I wanted something I could do that would utilize everything I learned in my 30-year career.

“I grew up with a mom with a disability, so I am accustomed to being a caregiver. I didn’t see that early on. She lived with us for the last 18 years of her life. There was no question that we wanted to be involved with a Right at Home franchise.”

And it has turned into a family affair with her son Christopher and husband Joe.

“Christopher started in high school, working part-time and learning the ropes,” she said.

Today, at 27, he’s a full-time care manager overseeing client intake, caregiver orientation, and daily care coordination. What began as a way to earn extra money quickly became a calling — deeply rooted in the values he grew up with in a caregiving home. 

After exploring roles in retail, hospitality and even film production, Christopher found his path right where he started: supporting seniors alongside his mom.

Renee is proud to mentor her son and watch him grow into a leader. With aspirations to co-own the agency in the future, Christopher is gaining hands-on experience and helping shape the business’s next chapter. 

“Through the pandemic, we understood how important it is to be comfortable in your own homes,” said Renee, the owner and operator. 

“What we do is enable those we serve — adults, mostly seniors — who can’t do everything they used to do themselves. 

“We want to help them be safer at home and help them maintain a level of independence that maybe they were accustomed to in the past.”

She said it is an honor to represent the Western region; the family and the corporate office support each other. The family does as well.

“It’s a pretty nice highlight to my career,” she said. “It’s a capstone to be able to do that. The last thing — and most important thing — is that every business has its challenges. However, Joe, Chris, and I working together is a beautiful thing.”
