Shalom Plotkin served as a rabbi for nearly 20 years, guiding families through life’s most challenging moments. When his father-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Plotkin gained firsthand insight into the complexities of caregiving — inspiring him to pursue a business that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
“This is a strong business, and it’s been financially rewarding,” he said. “But for us, the bigger picture was about helping people and making an impact.”
Plotkin joined a recent episode of “Meet the Zee,” hosted by 1851 Franchise publisher Nick Powills, to discuss his journey from personal experience to business ownership.
Plotkin shared that he discovered Right at Home through research on franchise opportunities and was drawn to the company’s mission during a visit to their headquarters. The opportunity to provide compassionate, affordable in-home care resonated deeply with him and his wife. Now, they have built an incredible, community-centric business.
“We don’t just help with basic tasks — we’re a vital link between clients, families, and healthcare providers,” he said. “That makes all the difference.”
A transcript of Plotkin’s interview with Powills has been provided below. It has been edited for clarity, brevity, and style.
Nick Powills: Tell me about your background before getting involved with Right at Home.
Shalom Plotkin: I was a rabbi for almost 20 years. That role put me in the middle of some of life’s most intense moments — dealing with grief, illness, and end-of-life issues. When my father-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, it really opened my eyes to the challenges families face when caregiving. It’s a difficult journey, and I wanted to be part of a solution.
Powills: What attracted you to franchising as a business model?
Plotkin: I wanted something sustainable that aligned with my values — focusing on service, family, and making a positive impact. I researched various options, but Right at Home stood out when I visited their Omaha headquarters. The founder, Allen Hager, shared his vision about filling gaps in health care. It felt authentic, and I connected with the mission immediately.
Powills: What sets Right at Home apart from other in-home care services?
Plotkin: The scope is much broader than just housekeeping or meal prep. Our caregivers do everything from driving clients to appointments, communicating directly with doctors, and helping families coordinate care — it’s really about making life easier and safer for people. And because we keep costs affordable, more families can get the support they need without being overwhelmed financially.
Powills: How has owning this franchise changed your life personally?
Plotkin: It’s definitely been financially rewarding, which is important, but what matters most is the sense of purpose. It’s a business that helps people every day, and that resonates deeply with me. Plus, it’s flexible enough for me to stay active in the community — I volunteer locally and run a Parkinson’s support group, so it all connects.
Powills: What advice do you have for prospective Right at Home franchisees?
Plotkin: Don’t approach this purely as a business or management opportunity. You have to care about people and understand the challenges of caregiving. It’s demanding but incredibly fulfilling. Also, make sure you take advantage of the franchise’s training and resources — the RightStart program was essential for me. It gave me a solid foundation while allowing me to build the business in my own way.
Powills: Where do you see the future of in-home care and your franchise heading?
Plotkin: The need for quality in-home care is only growing as the population ages. There’s a huge demand for more providers and caregivers. I believe this business will keep expanding, and if you want to build something meaningful that aligns with your values, Right at Home is a fantastic choice.
