Right at Home’s Ben and Tina Solomon have recently expanded.  Opening their fourth territory, the Solomon’s have approximately 180 caregivers serving the Seattle region and 26 people staffing the offices. The expansion into South King County includes partnering with Medicaid and PACE to reach underserved communities.

Ben and Tina Solomon,  longtime Seattle-based owners and administrators of a caregiving services provider in King and Pierce counties, recently expanded operations into a new area in South King County, largely to help underserved senior and disabled adult populations needing in-home medical care, other assistance in their homes, or simply companionship.

Right at Home franchisee Ben Solomon opened his fourth territory earlier this year to cover an area generally running from the King-Pierce County line north through Federal Way to roughly Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and including Kent and Auburn.

Right at Home services include companion care; personal care; nursing care; Alzheimer’s, cognitive, and dementia care; chronic condition care; helping adults with disabilities; veterans care; and respite for caregivers — all provided in a client’s home.

Solomon has three offices — Bellevue, Fife, and Northgate in Seattle — to serve his staff and coordinate client care in the four Puget Sound territories he owns with Right at Home.

The Fife office serves the new South King County area, plus his existing Pierce County market that includes Tacoma, Fife, Puyallup, Lakewood, University Place, Parkland, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Spanaway, Lake Tapp, Buckley, and Enumclaw.

The Bellevue office serves an Eastside area that includes Bothell, Redmond, Woodinville, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Bellevue’s Eastgate area, Newcastle, Issaquah, and Sammamish.

The Seattle office serves roughly Lynnwood, Kenmore, and the I-405 corridor south to Interstate 90. It includes Edmonds, Briar, Lake Forest Park, Shoreline, Bellevue, Kirkland, and all of Seattle east of Puget Sound, plus Renton Highlands but not downtown Renton or Tukwila.

“We’ve been operating in … Fife for around 13 years now (serving Pierce County), and we decided that it was important to buy this territory in South King County — and it has a lot to do with what we see as the changing demographics of caregiving needs in the Puget Sound area,” said Solomon, who’s been a local Right at Home franchisee for 20 years. “We thought it was really important to have a presence there as well.”

He has approximately 180 caregivers serving the region and about 26 staff members staffing his three offices, which coordinate care scheduling, skills and knowledge testing for licensed positions, and other personnel management. Solomon’s wife, Tina, runs human resources. All caregivers are Right at Home employees, and they range from companions and personal assistants to registered nurses.

Solomon’s expansion in South King County includes partnering with Medicaid and the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE, for caregivers to reach underserved communities. Those communities are also conveniently located to many caregivers’ residences.

“That was one of the big reasons why we decided to expand is a lot of what happens in home care is driven by your caregivers,” Solomon said. “The closer … that your care staff is to where the clients are, the better you are prepared and the better you’re able to support that community.”

The new service area taps into more caregivers who can support client populations with significant care needs but who don’t have the financial means to pay privately for caregiving, he said, noting the area’s significant need for caregivers.

Right at Home cares not only for seniors but also for people who may have complex medical conditions.

Many of them are veterans who might have spinal cord injuries, for example. Many also rely on a ventilator and tracheostomy tube for breathing support.

“So rather than being in a hospital where they’re having to live with a ventilator, they come home and we have nurses that support them with home ventilator services so they can be with their families — and they’re not necessarily elderly,” Solomon said. “Some of them have young families themselves, so we’re providing them that type of support throughout the region, which is really great and awesome.”

Solomon is also finding a need for helping people with developmental disabilities, providing respite for family caregivers.

“It’s such a huge need,” he said. “They may have young adults living at home who may have Down syndrome, or have autism, or have different developmental needs where they need people in the home to support, give respite to the families, and support them. It may not necessarily just be personal care with toileting, or bathing and showering, and getting dressed, but we can also be supporting them socially, helping them with some life skills development work — and that’s really rewarding. There’s a huge need for that as well.”

There’s a multitude of different types of people needing in-home care support and respite, Solomon said.

Respite for the primary caregiver or family member who provides care is important, he said, noting Right at Home can provide that support and relief.
