Description
Brian Braggs, a Right at Home franchise owner in Peoria, Illinois, is interviewed by Jenna Gosner, Franchise Development Director. He shares his journey from being a combat medic in the Army and then owning a multi-therapy practice to purchasing his Right at Home Peoria franchise in 2021. He explains why he values Right at Home’s extensive footprint, strong franchisee base, and 30 years of home care experience.
Previous Background
Brian Braggs has a long history of almost 20 years working in health care before joining Right at Home. He was a combat medic in the Army, a civilian medic after discharge, and then opened a multi-therapy practice with a partner that served 17+ counties in the NW suburbs of Illinois. Brian then decided he wanted to look at a franchise. Right at Home came up and he did his investigation and validation. He liked what he saw, heard, and felt. He relocated to Central Illinois and became a new franchise owner with Right at Home. He now gets to do what he loves every single day. Health care is definitely a part of his career, and he enjoys providing care for others who need help.
Choosing Right at Home
When Brian was evaluating and sizing up the franchise systems, he used a system of three markers – size, score, and scale – so he could understand the level of capacity. Right at Home ranked high against the other top players across the USA with 700 franchises in 46 states, 5 counties, and approximately 45,000 annual health care providers. It was easy for him to decide.
Life as a New Franchisee
A regular routine in the morning before work hours starts the day for Brian. He typically walks 2-3 miles in the morning so that he can be clear and focused for the work day. He notes that health care is always evolving because it’s a service industry working with humans. There are always things going on, whether is a caregiver, client, or family issue. The phones are always ringing, so we respond to those issues. He concludes by saying that a typical day is just making sure he is in the right head space, physically, emotionally, and spiritually to provide service.
Most Valuable Support
Brian admits that Right at Home’s long-standing history of providing in-home care for over 30 years as an industry leader is invaluable. The corporate office is located in Omaha, NE with over 100 people to support him with marketing, advertising, and social media. There are also people in technology who can support him with his software platforms that integrate with how he manages his clients and employees. Coaches work with him frequently looking at profit and wealth statements, margins, managing revenue, and how to have more community engagement. Plus, Right at Home is really great with Veterans. As a veteran, Brian received a discount on his franchise fee. He also provides quite a few services to veterans across his immediate area. He notes that Right at Home makes him feel safe and secure in what he is doing every day, and doesn’t have to feel like he is alone in the fight. He feels supported.
Impactful Moment
With many stories to select from, Brian spoke about the wife of a veteran who needed care. She had spoken to him about 3-4 months prior when investigating home care providers. She had initially selected a provider who was located very near their home. However, they were frustrated with staffing issues from that provider. Brian was able to step in and provide the care and staffing needs for her husband that were needed right away.
Advice to Prospective Owner
Brian was blessed to have health care experience prior to starting with Right at Home, but he knows that others out there have transferable skills. He admits you need to have good time management skills because there will be situations happening all the time and you have to be resilient. He also suggests making sure you are clear, focused, and ready for any of the stresses of life that come on, because they will come. And, you need to make sure you have a level head. Also knowing about finances is important. You want to make sure you know what it is costing you to invest whether it is a new territory or purchasing an existing territory, that you are fully funded. He concluded with “It’s a lifestyle of evolving, and you don’t sweat the small stuff.”
