Making the Decision
Jobin Mathai owns two territories in Dallas, Texas. After signing the franchise agreement in February 2023, they opened the business in August 2023. Coming from the restaurant industry, Jobin had over 20 years of franchise experience from both working on the corporate and franchise side, with positions as director of operations, as well as director of training and development.
Choosing Right at Home
Coming from a franchise background, Jobin understood that he wanted to be a part of a franchise system because of the support and teamwork that comes from the franchisor. He wanted to have a business where he and his wife could both be partners, financially grow a future, feel satisfied, and serve his community. Jobin also wanted to have an impact on his caregivers’ and office staff’s lives. After several conversations with his wife, Right at Home was clearly the best choice.
Starting Out
Jobin discusses the importance of his RightStart Coach and the importance of staying on track, and not missing deadlines when the business first started. Following his final training class, he started hiring, managing all the pre-open tasks, completing staff hiring, training, distributing marketing pieces, preparing the office, and setting up the technology. Right at Home provides a checklist, timelines, and process to follow so you are ready to open. Another piece of advice Right at Home provided was to “Work on the Business; Don’t work in the Business.” They taught us how to build a team, and get the business up and running. Jobin hired a director of operations and an office manager, so they could focus on the detail portion of things. Those new hires allowed Jobin to work on the business by going out in the community, meeting people, and other franchisees, creating policies and procedures, and what the company is going to be known for. Then he started working on creating a foundation for the culture, working on how they wanted to evolve and grow. They continue to grow, learn, and prepare for fast reaction times. We continually look at what events are coming up in different community centers to be a part of and sponsor. They also spend a great deal of time working with the team and caregivers in training. Each month reviewing one topic and putting some incentive behind it. They also look at recognizing a caregiver per month. Jobin meets with social workers, managers, rehab facilities, and other Right at Home franchisees regularly, getting the word out on the business, as well as asking for advice.
Right at Home Support
Jobin praised his RightStart Coach. He noted that his coach has been with him from the day he signed, and is available for him over the weekend, Sunday, Monday, etc. His coach is very resourceful and provides the answers or connects him with someone who can help him.
Advice to a Prospective Franchisee
When asked for one piece of advice he could share, Jobin commented to research the market as well as you can. Make sure to check zip codes, rehab facilities, hospitals, know what is going on in the community, and research the competition and what they are known for. It’s important to have conversations with others about what keeps you up at night, what are the opportunities, and how to close the gap. Also, talk with other Right at Home franchisees and ask questions.
