Description

Ted Pease was looking for a service-based industry in which to start a business. Ted did his research and selected Right at Home for his franchise almost a year ago. Ted discusses many topics with Jessica Cornelius, Right at Home Franchise Development Director, including how Right at Home provided support and collaboration, as well as emphasized the importance of connecting with other new owners.

Previous Background

Ted Pease became a Right at Home franchisee in June 2023. He owns two territories outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his previous career, Ted was an active-duty Surface Warfare Officer for 10 years. He then got his MBA, moved to Pennsylvania, and worked for AIG for 2 years before deciding to become an entrepreneur and purchase his own business.

Why Right at Home?

Wanting to provide a good service for people was Ted’s goal. He knew the business needed to be a service-based industry and people-centric. Once he started interviewing with Right at Home Corporate and speaking with other Right at Home franchise owners, he heard how much the franchisor helps its owners. Right at Home was a name brand in the industry, plus it was the right location, right time, right price. He said everything combined for a good opportunity to become an owner.

Day in the Life

A typical day for Ted includes being in the office so he can get the system and the functionality of the office up to speed, mixed along with a lot of sales. He notes that Right at Home helps with branding, your legal structures, and your organization. But home care is a relationship-based business, so you need to be out selling, meeting people, creating relationships, and generating leads so you can grow.

Most Valuable Support

Ted comments that there isn’t one piece of support in particularly valuable, but many items. He says that the website is very professional, Right at Home has got national TV ads appearing, and the Right at Home network of owners is a wonderful resource. Ted notes he can pass leads to other owners around him ensuring the Right at Home brand stays strong, as well as keeping the relationship strong with the referral sources. Corporate provides legal support, system support, and quick responses to your questions. In his experience, if it’s something to do with your operations system, sales, or marketing, somebody will answer you within 24 hours, or they will get you to the next step.

Advice to Prospective Franchisees

Validation is important. Ted says to call owners who are in your shoes. For example, Ted was purchasing a resale territory, so he suggested calling owners who were recent resales. Calling owners who have multiple territories or have been in the system is also helpful because they talk about the progression of Right at Home and the organization as a whole. Talking to those owners who are new businesses and learning the ins and outs is beneficial. Ted just came back from an owner’s conference, and he said it was nice to talk to a group of new owners who understand how hard the same things are, and know what you’re dealing with. It’s also educational to talk with other owners about their client base, i.e., private pay, big clients vs. little clients, billable hours, where they get their leads, and how to build leads.
