Duration: 30m 02s

Description:

Listen in as Right at Home’s Brady Schwab, Chief Growth Officer, interviews Margaret Haynes, President and CEO, on the importance of mission, vision, and values in guiding the leadership of Right at Home. They talk about the role of advocacy for home care providers and the need for a collective voice to elevate the industry. Margaret Haynes highlights the importance of strategy in the home care industry, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to guide decision-making and resource allocation. She also addresses the need for innovation, technology, and collaboration in addressing the growing demand for caregivers due to the increasing aging population. Margaret also stresses the significance of engaging in the franchise network and learning from best practices.

HCAOA Board President Role

Margaret notes she is honored to serve as this year’s Board President for the HCAOA, the largest national home care association with over 4,000 members. The association helps its members navigate and advocate within the home care industry, as well as helps and educates all of its independent owner and operator members to understand the things happening at a state, national, and federal level. Right at Home actually pays for their franchise owners to have a membership in HCAOA so they can vote at the national level. Where there are state associations in HCAOA, she encourages owners to get involved there, as well. It’s very important to have communication channels open to focus on the right things. The HCAOA does have lobbyist resources that work at a federal level. Some state chapters have their own lobbyists as well. Within the Right at Home organization, Doug Robertson, Senior Director of Government Affairs, is the conduit to the lobbyists in DC. Doug is very influential, active in the VA subcommittee of the HCAOA, and very instrumental in getting an elevation of the reimbursement rates that come through the VA. Right at Home advocates from a brand perspective in the things we need to do, being active in the natl association, leveraging lobbyists, and trying to elevate the collective voice from an advocacy perspective.

Strategy Importance: Franchisee, Corporate, Industry

Margaret states that strategy provides a vision, purpose, and direction so you know where to put your time, energy, and treasure to move forward. At Right at Home, Haynes notes they built out a 3-year plan in 2022 when she stepped into the CEO role, starting with listening sessions with their franchise network, finding out what they are seeing in the field and in their local markets. Right at Home also created a Strategic Leadership Council (SLC) made up of representatives throughout the franchise network and did working strategy sessions with them. Then we included the corporate staff and Board members in the strategy sessions, as well. Right at Home also went to outside experts and to the founder of the organization, Allen Hager. With all of that information gathered, it culminated in a 3-year strategy, with clear objectives, and goals. No plan is 100% perfect, but we keep refreshing it to keep the three-year vision alive, providing direction and motivation.

Moving the Business Forward

Margaret talks about coming out of the pandemic and people recognizing the value of seeing people aging in their homes versus in a facility was definitely showcased and brought to light. There is a need to continue to educate people about the value of home care, making them aware of Right at Home’s services, as well as some of the entitlement programs around Medicare or Medicaid. Also, innovation, as things as moving faster, we have to be able to leverage technology. There is also not enough base of caregivers to take care of the aging population. We want to make sure Right at Home is the brand that caregivers choose to work for.

Innovation

Margaret discusses innovation as incremental improvements in things we’re doing today. A team was created to think about how we continue to innovate around the business model, which includes the concept of limiting the times the caregiver needs to be there. How can we innovate around technology, provide peace of mind, and caregiver support? The team will work on new ways of innovation until we get a home run, because we recognize our franchise owners are independently owned and operated.

Biggest Plan Initiative

Right at Home has adopted the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) as an operational tool that takes your strategy and brings it to life. Being intentional to make sure we’re focused on where we need to take the company and the brand in support of the growth of all those who are part of the network.

Focus Needed When Starting a Business

Margaret advises new owners to be open to best practices, be engaged, and follow the steps laid out in the proven business model.
