Description
As a civil litigator with decades of experience in the legal field, Josh Steiner didn’t necessarily plan to become a Right at Home franchise owner. In fact, he had no caregiving experience at all. But when his brother encouraged him to invest, Josh decided it was time for a major change.
“So I just decided to pull the trigger,” says Josh. “And it’s everything that I’ve expected and more.”
Josh is relatively new to the Right at Home family. His brother Mike Steiner became a franchise owner in Rays Lake, Illinois more than a decade ago. Josh partnered with his brother in 2024. In that short span of time, Josh has been deeply inspired by the late-stage career change.
Shifting Career Gears
Like many of our franchise owners, Josh took a winding path to home care.
“I did civil litigation for 30 years,” Josh tells us. “My clients loved me. I had great relationships with them, but it’s not like they were really super happy when I was involved with their cases…People weren’t generally very psyched about having to go to litigation.”
But he’s experienced a whole new level of gratitude and gratification supporting home caregivers and their clients.
“It’s much different here,” says Josh. “I get a pretty good feeling about helping people.”
After three decades in the legal profession, Josh acknowledges that partnering with his brother in a Right at Home franchise “was just a huge change.”
But, says Steiner, “I’m really glad I made it.”
Building on an Established Franchise
So what does the day-to-day look like for the former litigator? Josh says that he’s opted for a very hands-on role in the business. His brother already runs a very strong organization, John notes. He sees his role as spreading visibility and recognition for the franchise, but he’s also happy to wear a lot of hats.
“Our territory is not that large, so I handle almost all the marketing. I do a lot of the intakes, a lot of the assessments.”
Though the move to home care was a pretty dramatic career change, Josh praises Right at Home for easing the transition. He explains that Right at Home provides franchisees valuable support resources and helpful continuing education.
“That’s why I’ve really enjoyed the boot camp series for marketing and sales…They have great, great input and great ideas. I highly recommend it to any existing owner.”
Getting Real Support
Of course, Right at Home provides a level of support that goes beyond these valuable resources. Real, actual human beings are available to support franchisees at every step of the way, and at every stage of ownership.
“The response time is amazing,” says Josh. “Always. Whenever we have questions, corporate answers them for us.”
And when Josh says corporate, he’s not talking about some third-party customer service office in a remote location. As a franchisee, he says, he has been impressed with the incredible amount of access he’s had to knowledgeable and experienced leaders within the organization.
“I mean all the way to the top….everybody’s open to having a discussion with you.”
Using the Right at Home Roadmap
As a recent addition to the Right at Home family, Josh advises those considering their own franchise to trust the process.
“Follow the general guidelines that corporate lays out for you to be successful,” he says. “Yes, every territory is different, and you have to fine tune processes to make sure it works for you…but you do get really good guidelines from corporate, and you should follow those guidelines, and you’ll be a success.”
