Randy Price is a seasoned veteran with Right at Home. The Dallas native launched his franchise in 2009 and now serves 11 territories across Tyler, Texas. But even before connecting with Right at Home, Randy was focused on finding ways to help people through entrepreneurship.
Prior to joining the Right at Home family, Randy spent 17 years in the manufacturing business. Part of his long tenure in manufacturing included “two years on business missions in Mexico, which meant taking work down there to help people have jobs.”
“I’ve always loved serving and helping people, and this was a way we could do that,” he says. Clearly, Randy was a perfect fit for Right at Home.
Taking the First Steps Together
Right at Home was also a perfect fit for Randy. Though he had launched a number of his own businesses over the years, joining the Right at Home network was an entirely new experience. All these years later, it’s an experience that Randy would still highly recommend to others who share his entrepreneurial spirit.
“It’s the first time I’ve been in a franchise system,” says Randy, “and I tell people often, if you’re going to start a business, and you can find a good franchise system – which is really hard to do – that is definitely the best way to go.”
This is because the right franchise system offers a level of support that can make all the difference in the world when you’re getting your business off the ground. There’s a lot to get done even before you open your doors. Randy explains that Right at Home provides both a roadmap and a team of enthusiastic navigators.
“From day one, hiring our first employee, getting the licensing, the whole drill – we had everything laid out,” says Randy. “That was really helpful.”
This is something that hasn’t changed over 17 years in the Right at Home network. Randy tells us that his business still works closely with the amazing team at corporate, with an array of knowledgeable in-house specialists, and with other franchise owners through his Performance Group. All of these resources remain vital to Randy’s business as it continues to grow and thrive.
Growing With the Business
There’s a good reason that Randy’s business continues to grow and thrive. Even at this stage in his franchise ownership, Randy is still striving forward.
“I’m a continuous improvement person. I’m not a retirement person,” Randy tells us. “So I continue to pour a lot into the business – financially, mentally, and emotionally.”
When he began this journey nearly two decades ago, Randy’s life revolved around day to day management. But the truest marker of his success is the fact that he now has a trusted team in place to handle daily business operations.
This means that, today, Randy spends his time “working on the business” rather than “working in the business.” This is an expression we use a lot around here to describe the evolving role of the successful franchise owner. But what exactly does it mean to Randy?
“I love tweaking and designing,” Randy explains. “So it’s very much about organizational structure and vision. It’s about asking ourselves, ‘What can we do to be the best and, most importantly, what can we do to deliver the best quality of care in the home?”
Getting to the Heart of Home Care
For Randy, that means working closely with team leaders and office managers to ensure constant adaptation and improvement. But it also means that he’s had to delegate some of the most fulfilling aspects of the job to others.
“That’s the hard part,” says Randy. Like most startup franchise owners, Randy “wore a lot of hats” in those early years. That included recruiting, marketing, outreach, administrative work, and much more. But it also included plenty of home visits and personal caregiving opportunities. This is one part of the job Randy truly misses.
“We actually had a meeting this morning where I was talking to two of my top leaders about how they were still out in the homes and I said, ‘It’s just so life-giving to be out there in the home, seeing what we’re doing and feeling it and experiencing it and making a difference,’” Randy told us.
Still On a Mission
And making this difference is really what it’s all about. Even now, as Randy presides over 11 territories and a thriving business, his heart is still focused on the impact. Randy has clearly succeeded in channeling this mission into an extremely profitable business. But Randy observes that the mission must come first, and the money will follow.
“If you’re getting into this to make a bunch of money, please don’t do it,” advises Randy. “It’s too hard. It’s 24/7. It just won’t work. The caregivers won’t resonate with you. The clients won’t resonate with you.”
Caregiving is rewarding and fulfilling, but it can also be demanding and emotionally taxing. Randy observes that success comes to those who are doing it for the right reasons.
“If serving people and helping people is better than a paycheck for you,” says Randy, “then you’re on the right track.”
