Background and Intro
Franchise owner Vishal Patel has been in the Right at Home system for two years, opening in October 2021 in Highland Falls, NY. In October 2023, he will be expanding to his second territory which is contiguous with his first. Before coming to Right at Home, Vishal had been in the hospitality or hotel industry. He still has interest in businesses in that industry but was able to see in 2019 and 2020, especially with COVID, that there was an opportunity for him and his wife to invest in a franchise business.
The Decision to Come to Right at Home
Vishal noted that he didn’t have a ton of money to invest, and didn’t want to buy a building or open a business such as a hotel. He and his wife did have enough money to consider Right at Home. They didn’t need to own any property, just lease an office. After two years, they are still in the same office, continuing to grow the business.
A Typical Day
A typical day for Vishal begins in the morning. You could get a call from a caregiver, your manager, or perhaps even your client, depending on how involved you are. Vishal notes he is very hands-on as they are still in a growing stage of their business. His business is floating around 500 hours per week, so he can still handle intakes with his clients, home visits, in-home consults, and recruitment. Once somebody becomes a new customer, they will be handled by our staff. The same happens with caregivers. Vishal feels that one of his strengths is human resources, which includes retention and motivation of staff. He doesn’t want to give those things up when it comes to this business.
Support from Right at Home
Vishal has over 20 years of working with hotel franchises, but said that working with Right at Home is different. Right at Home takes a really nice approach. Their mission, which is to improve the quality of life for those we serve, that’s us right here at this office, commented Vishal. But he also feels that is the mission at headquarters in Omaha, because of the support that he receives. His Performance Coach, Brian, feels like his role is to help us succeed, trying to improve the quality of life for someone that he’s serving. We feel like it’s a full circle. Omaha is trying to improve our quality of life, and as a franchisee we are trying to improve the quality of life of our caregivers, and our caregivers are improving the quality of life for our clients.
Advice to a Prospective Franchisee
For anyone considering this business, Vishal has more than one piece of advice. Anyone considering this business should be doing this for a specific reason – a desire to help others. The reason is because there are people out there that need help. If you care enough, then you can put in the effort to provide that care in a way that actually makes a difference. Vishal also adds you need to have patience, especially when you’re starting out or opening a brand-new territory. There are ups and downs, and any owner will tell you that. If you can make it over the threshold where you’re having positive cashflow, and keep growing it, you can actually start to see a profit.
Running a Successful Home Care Business
Vishal states he appreciates everything they’ve learned from Right at Home. Over the past two years in learning from Right at Home, he has become more personable and has changed his own management style. He has learned how to micro-manage less, trust others more, and be more engaged with what others have going on in their own lives. He says, “I’m able to assign tasks and walk away with confidence that my staff has the desire to keep their word and perform to their greatest ability.”
