Previous Background

Stacy Hepinger owns a Right at Home Franchise in North Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She oversees two territories. Jessica Cornelius is Franchise Development Director for Right at Home.

Making the Decision

Stacy started as a caregiver for Right at Home in 2018. She had done some personal caregiving for her grandmother before she passed away. As she grew as a caregiver, an opportunity presented itself for her to transition to more of an administrative role and get to learn more about that side of the business. Eventually, the owner decided he wanted to retire and made the offer to Stacey to sell his franchise to her. Hepinger fell in love with the industry, being a caregiver, and seeing how important it is to provide their services. When the opportunity arrived to learn the business from the administrative side, she felt it was really important for her growth and development. Little did she know that it would ultimately lead her to become a franchise owner.

Choosing Right at Home

Right at Home was recommended to my family when we were caring for our grandmother. They sent out some fantastic people to talk to us about the services offered and told us how they would be able to provide help for our family, and ultimately send some fantastic caregivers to help with my grandmother. After my grandmother passed, through that process, and being exposed to Right at Home, I ultimately decided that it was time to transition from stay-at-home mom to the workforce. Caregiving was the path I was interested in. Right at Home was the only place I wanted to go. I continued on through interviewing and onboarding. The staff was supportive and knowledgeable. The field supervisor brought so many years of experience to this particular business. As a caregiver, I asked her many questions, and she treated me with so much respect. This cemented that caregiving was the right field for me. Being able to learn the administrative side was a unique challenge, as I received a business degree a long time ago when I first started after high school. And ultimately being in the position to become a franchisee was an amazing opportunity.

A Typical Day

Stacy’s daughter just shadowed her earlier this week. It was very interesting for her to break down the day and explain it to a 15-year-old. According to her daughter, Stacy’s job is very boring. But Stacy loves what she does. As an owner, she still handles the day to day of payroll, billing, and scheduling caregivers and clients. Inside and outside sales fall on everyone in the office. As the owner, she also speaks at a workforce development conference to advocate for caregivers.

Support from Right at Home

Stacy’s office is located within close proximately of four other established Right at Home franchises. It’s great to be able to reach out to their various staff about what’s working for them and ask about best practices. Right at Home is a very collaborative and cooperative system. Corporate support from the performance coach is fantastic. If he can’t answer my questions, he gets me going in the right direction. Whether it’s marketing or HR, corporate makes it readily available

Advice to a Prospective Franchisee

Make sure you go through the discovery process. Make sure that your intentions are pure. This is a fantastic industry and a great franchise system to work for. But at the end of the day, nobody’s going to be a millionaire. You have to be in this for the right reason and that is making sure that you, as a person want to see your business provide a high level of care to all of your clients.
