Meet the Family | Nick Paul

Duration: 9m 39s

Description

Always wanting to have his own business, Nick Paul decided to take the leap after over 20 years of working in the accounting/CPA field. In this session of Meet the Family, Nick discusses his aspirations, and the process, as well as provides advice as he recounts his story to Jessica Cornelius, Franchise Development Director at Right at Home.

Previous Background

Nick Paul is a Right at Home franchise owner located in Spokane Washington. He opened his business in April 2021. Before purchasing his territory, Nick was CPA working at a nonprofit healthcare system.

Making the Decision

Instead of being in the back office, Nick decided that his values and dreams were more aligned with helping people. Nick always wanted to have his own business, and he found his calling to help people by becoming a Right at Home franchise owner.

Business with a Purpose

“You have to have the heart and passion for this business,” Nick said. He explained that you will definitely get into the weeds when you first start from the ground up. Nick said he wore many different hats in the beginning, working client shifts, and doing a bit of everything.

A Typical Day

Starting amid the pandemic, Nick admits his day has changed a lot. When he first started, it was just him and his scheduler. He would perform assessments, marketing calls, networking events, and supervisory visits, as well as be on-call all the time.  If a caregiver missed a shift, he would fill in. Because he did work for somebody before, he explained this as good stress, because now he was working for himself and building his business. Now he is just working on managing the business and has people in place to do different things.

Support from Right at Home

When Nick first considered a franchise, he knew his limitations and knew he wanted a franchise because of the support. Right at Home exceeded his expectations. He felt there is no way he could have done this by himself. It would have taken him so much longer to get where he is now. Corporate supplies a big knowledge base of information and are easy to contact.  With convenience, he can also call any franchise owner in the country to see how they are handling processes and protocols. Nick said, “I got my money’s worth.”

Advice to a Prospective Franchisee

Have patience and an open mind. Be prepared to do some grunt work, as I purchased a new territory starting the business. Be able to adapt and change on a moment’s notice. Take advice from corporate and other franchise owners.

Would You Make This Decision Again

“Definitely,” Nick says, “Home care is a very noble business to be in. I want to leave a legacy. I’ll leave this place better than when I can in. Right at Home aligns with my values, what I want to do, and I can be successful.”
